At what point in spiritual growth, do I call myself a "Christian"?

In order to be certain that my mistakes or hasty reactions that I still have from time to time don’t confuse others, I am very careful with the use of the term “Christian.” So, when I am asked if I am a Christian, I often qualify my response of "Yes" with “Yes, I am; however, I am still growing." Whether I state this outloud or just remind myself internally,  I know that over time, I hope to become more Christlike or a “better Christian,” increasingly adept at offering “Fruit of the Spirit,” in any given situation. But why am I so cautious when answering that question?

The ongoing process of transformation: Does the term "Christian" only represent a title for those who have acquired an interest in Jesus? Or is it really meant to describe a developing state of consciousness on the part of souls who are very committed to the process of spiritual transformation?

Well, in continuing with my example of how I understand my position in the Body to be, I know that regardless of having completed two Bible Colleges, having spent years in study and in relationship to the Spirit; and yes...even in spite of any Offices which God may have assigned me to, I still am undergoing elements of the "Baptism of Fire" each day, the exposing, removing, and healing of the "old" as I learn to respond to life's moments through the leading of the Spirit (New Man).

I also know that if the term “Christian” points to an aspiration to be “Christ-like,” well I can’t say that I am Christ-like yet, because my human nature resurfaces now and then; but with God’s help, over time, I pray to become more and more like Jesus.

So based on that analysis, would it be wrong for any of us to call ourselves a Christian? Of course not; however, out of respect for the true meaning of the word and in realizing that the way we behave and treat others is a reflection on Jesus as well as on the Body of Christ in general, then I would hope that anyone who calls themselves a Christian, especially those in leadership, would do everything possible to walk in Mercy and hold to the Spirit. This would include being mindful in situations where we are wearing Christian jewelry, clothing, or displaying bumper-stickers from our vehicles. Are we remembering our manners, picking up after ourselves, driving with consideration, tipping and thanking our servers and service providers; in short, are we showing acts of consideration at every opportunity? Hopefully, there would be enough kindness and general “Fruit of the Spirit,” eminating from us that others would at least be curious to know what motivates us, and maybe by God's Grace, those we come in contact with would be moved and feel blessed. 

As Ambassadors for Christ, we now have the responsibility to recognize that our behavior, reactions or responses are not just about us anymore, but in developing habits of holding close to the Spirit within for guidance, we might see what God can do through us to comfort, heal, and encourage others, even in the midst of challenges.
